Jinhao 500 Coffee Medium Nib [$5.98 FS]. Arrived 12/22/15. Described by katerchen as having a “generic Pelikan look.” (Image from the seller’s site.) This is a very good pen, and I’m awarding it 4 out of 5 stars for construction and appearance and 4 out of 5 for writing. For an explanation of my rating system, see the “About” page.
: My first China pen arrived in the afternoon mail.
The pen, ordered on Dec. 12, arrived 10 days later on Dec. 22, bundled in a light package, roughly 8″ x 3″ x 2″. This is the first to arrive of all the pens I ordered on Dec. 12 and later. Purchased from Crown Pen Store, Guangdong, China (Mainland). The vendor, listed in the return address, is Huang Chao, No.S1007 South Wuhusihai, District Liwanqu, Guangzhoushi Guangdong, 510140.
The pen was carefully wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap.
The pen, in a black felt slip case, next to the wrapping.
First view of the pen. The slip case is well made, and the pen is absolutely gorgeous!
Pen with cap off. The cap comes off with a light pull, and snaps back on easily with a satisfying click. It posts easily and firmly and doesn’t shake loose.
Pen partially disassembled. The converter is firmly in place. A slight twist and pull removes it. I’ll be testing this pen with an international cartridge when that shipment arrives. Everything about this pen is first rate — the look and feel, the precision engineering, the finish, the balance.
The Jinhao 500 writes smoothly, without any skipping. No blotching. The ink is Higgins Eternal. Absolutely no scratchiness of any kind. Very smooth and even flow of ink. The feel and balance in my hand, on my fingers, is very good. The cap posts firmly with a minimum of pressure. I didn’t need to clean the converter or the nib with detergent as some have claimed is necessary with these cheap Chinese pens. This pen is writing beautifully right out of the package. Some have complained about the weight, that these all metal pens are too heavy. But the weight is neither excessive nor uncomfortable. In fact, it feels good, luxurious. This is a medium nib, and it’s on the finer side of medium. The ink is neither excessively wet nor dry. This is the first draft of this writing test. I love this pen.
The Jinhao 500 has a plastic liner in the cap to protect the barrel end when posted. The felt holder, which came with the pen, is cracking after a day’s use.
